The Wallowa Rustler

The Wallowa Rustler

The Rustler was trying to find his
way home
on horseback through blinding rain, sleet
and snow
every stone, blade of grass, tree,
and hill
were covered with rain, sleet
and ice.

The Elders sat on horses on a hill
and watched
as the pitiful Soyapo rode his stallion
head down
across the land that no man
could conquer
glancing quietly at one another through hooded
buffalo robes

They silently watched, curious to see a man who rode
with death
The Elders made the sign with hands brown
and old
of two riders (going home), one living, one dead
The rustler had found his destination, he found
his way home.
